A fund that does well in a bull market and still manages to get by in a bear market.

That's a tough one.  Depends on what your criteria is:  low costs, investment returns, customer service, variety of funds, etc.  I personally like:  Vanguard, Fidelity, and/or TR Price.  
With an honorable mention to USAA, and Oakmark.

Go to Vanguard and select Index Funds. A great book to read about investing is the Coffee House Investor. Go to their website and talks about mutual funds and index mutual funds. Good luck!!

After no load in mutual fund investor are big mistake to direct investment idea and select some under perform scheme i hope you give charge to adviser and take benefit of their expertise.

Some good mutual fund scheme are

HDFC Top 200
Reliance Vision Fund
DSPBR Top 100 Equity Fund
ICICI Discovery Fund
Birla Frontline
